Homeschool Math Lesson
Maddie & Dominic are getting a hands-on education in Economics and math. Their lemonade stand in Old Lyme, CT has already made them $70 in 3 short afternoons. WooHoo! Hooray for learning!
A Stop at the Furrier Shop
Tory & I took the fur coats we inherited from Aunt Zena, to a really upscale furrier shop in downtown Hartford (this is a well-to-do part of town). How odd we must have appeared, walking down the blvd. in beach attire, carrying fur coats. I was laughing the whole way. We walked into this exquisite shop, with beautiful furs of all colors and lengths hanging in a very ostentatious manner. We were greeted by the blonde sales associate, dressed finely, and introduced herself, in a Swedish accent, as Olga. After our explanation of the items, she assessed them with a gentle and discerning touch. She knew what she was looking for apparently. Immediately she noticed that both long coats were dry, and the stole was dry but workable. Basically, no good. The 2 coats were too dry to recondition, plus they are out of style. We asked her about peoples interest in vintage pieces, and she believed that the most we could get would be $150 for the stole only, since it was the only "mink" item and it was in the best shape. The other 2 coats are on their way to falling apart. Now as I handle them, it's evident to me what she said was true. One of the coats is already ripping with just the minimal handling we've done. Nonetheless, I got an education on fur coats. You know, for the day I go to buy one. Hee Hee. At one point while we were in the store, she went to the back to talk to the owner about the type of fur of one of the coats, and I was doing a "Dominic"....touching everything!!! I was tempted to walk through the racks like my kids do at Target while hearing me reprimand them. Most of the coats there were in the $3-$15 thousand dollar range. Yikes! But oh how luxuriously soft they were. I would love to have a blanket made out of one. Anyway, I will try to sell the stole at a vintage clothing store and see what I can get for it. There must be someone who wants to feel rich, yet not pay the cost.

Old Lyme, CT 2011
Long, cool, restful days in Old Lyme. That is what we are enjoying here in CT at the beach cottage. Although we are working on the restoration on the cottage, we are taking time to chill out and enjoy playing, gardening, and reading. The sun rises here at 4:15 a.m., a dream come true for us early risers. Mom enjoys meating the deer and rabbits on her early morning runs. Dad spends the week working his financial business at his satelite office in the corner of the cottage. The kids are playing all day outdoors. Baseball and crabbing during the day, walking down to the carousel and ice cream parlor at night. Temperatures are 50's during the night and 70's during the day. It's heavenly!

Happy New Year 2011
Off to a crazy start already....
Our 14 year old golden lab Bucky a.k.a. Marley, managed to knock over our 8 ft. Christmas tree, snapping it in half, without breaking a single ornament. All we could do was laugh. At least it was the day after Christmas. Although, everyday up to that moment it was predicted that a horrific incident like this would occur. Each time, our dear old Bucky would pass the tree, he would always manage to walk threateningly close by it, causing the artificial timber to spin in its base. One of these whirls caused the loss of our star. Another whirl gave the tree a leaning, artistic effect. One thing is for sure, each spin each day gave us a new look at our ornaments. I guess thats looking at the bright side of things.
Our third day into January and we find ourselves paying a visit to our orthopedic doctor. That's right...a new broken bone in our family. Who is it this time you wonder. The winner is Maddie. Our dear, sweet, shy, quiet, young lady breaks her 5th metacarpal (hand bone) of her left hand. Fortunately, it was a simple fracture, easily repaired with only rest and the use of a splint.
What else awaits us, we can only imagine, but we know one thing is for sure...God is faithful and good!

Dominic's Surgery
What a difficult 2 weeks we have had. On Sept. 21, 2009, our littlest Uccello fell from the couch and hit the corner of the coffee table with his eye. It was a serious enough situation that we rushed him to the ER only to discover that he suffered a left oribital floor fracture with entrapment of tissue. After being sent to All Children's Hospital in St Pete via medical ambulance transport, we settled on having a local Oculo-Facial Plastic Surgeon whom we felt very comfortable with in handling the needs of our child. He performed the surgery to repair the fracture while removing the entrapment of muscle and tissue. We pray that this will resolve the double vision issue.
Dominic has been so brave through all of this. He made friends with everyone he met and always cooperated as much as he was able. He even left the hospital the day of discharge with a smile on his face.

1st Day of School 2009
Our first day of Uccello homeschool was a success. This year all three children will be homeschooled. Alex begins 7th grade, Madeline starts 4th grade, and Dominic will be Kindergarten/1st grade. We look forward to a year full of learning and fun.

Early Return to Florida
Old Lyme has been great but the time has come for the family to return home. We return to FL on August 5 and Tory will fly back to CT to continue the remodeling of the cottage for the next month. We decided to shorten our stay due to the fact that most of the construction has been on the exterior of the home and living inside has been ok. Now the next phase of remodeling will be mostly interior i.e. flooring, wall repair, vaulting ceiling, etc. The cottage is only about 500 sq ft so it would be nearly impossible to live amidst the work needing to be done. So to FL we go. Before we head home we visited Mystic Seaport, a quaint seafaring town 30 min. from Old Lyme. Lots to see and do there. Great ships to board and tour. A great history lesson. We also visited St Augustine's lighthouse where upon reaching the top (13 flights), we discovered our lab, Bucky, escaped from our locked vehicle and was roaming around the streets looking for us. Consequently touring the lighthouse was cut short but Bucky was saved. Ahh... the joys of pet ownership. Upon arriving home, we were exhausted but overwelmed by the space of our home. We have unappreciated our space and all the luxeries of hot showers, air condition, w/d, working kitchen, etc. God has blessed us and we must always count those blessings daily. Our Old Lyme cottage will continue to progress and we will post the news. One day we will return as a family and we will enjoy it as a vacation instead of work.
